With the video print Perpetually Present, Claudia Hart continues her series of animated still-life paintings for the post-digital moment. Called Machines for Thinking, the series portrays environments in which time is fluid and elastic. These digital “pictorial-clockworks” and simulated architectures form uncanny and mesmerizing worlds. Hart aims to use the possibilities engendered by computer imaging to ameliorate the cultural traumas they have also engendered.

Perpetually Present was curated by Transfer Gallery, an LA-based exhibition space that explores the friction of virtual studio practice and its physical instantiation.

Artist Bio

Claudia Hart emerged as part of a generation of 90s intermedia artists in the “identity art” niche. Today, she focuses on the effects of technology on the cultural constructions of gender identities and issues of the body, perception, and nature when collapsed into technology. As an early adopter of virtual imaging, Hart used 3D animation first in media installations, projections, and then in VR, AR, and other softwares. At the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she developed a unique curriculum on simulation technologies in the context of the art world. She lives in New York and Chicago, works with Transfer gallery and bitforms galleries, and is married to the Austrian media artist Kurt Hentschlager.
