Lay produced the video BIC Maxi Short for Daata. Viewers witness a manipulated body of a Bic brand cigarette lighter slowly ejecting its mystical contents, saturating itself with a kind of hyper-functionality. The video follows Lay’s interest in a realm of speculative realism - instead of placing human existence above the object, he dissolves the privilege between the two. The lack of any human presence in his work makes the objects themselves into characters where moments of confusion, suspensions and manipulation become important instigators.
