Shurooq Amin - Kuwait City, Kuwait, NO sTAiN LINES, 2022

The title NO sTAiN LINES is a play on words (tan/stain), and takes the simple vacation act of tanning, transforming it into a Dystopian act of deconstruction of feminine history and expectations. Pomegranates represent the fertility and sexuality of a woman throughout literature, so this painting is a metaphoric snapshot of a woman slicing away at history’s expectations of her.

Artist Bio:

Shurooq Amin is an award-winning artist with a PhD in Ekphrasis, a 30 year career in art, and a pioneer in socio-political "artivism" in the region. She is the first Kuwaiti female artist to exhibit at the Venice Biennale, the first to be auctioned at Christie's, and the first to break the stereotypes of what it means to be an Arab female artist in her country, having had her exhibitions shut down by authorities and her work banned on the false premise that it is "blasphemous". In fact, Amin's work pushes the boundaries and explores cultural hypocrisies extant in her society and calls for opening a dialogue on taboo topics in order to instigate positive change in society. In early 2021, Amin became the first artist from Kuwait to enter the world of NFT art. She turned to NFTs as a platform for freedom of expression, to be able to continue her mission for justice and freedom without censorship, and since then has been supporting other women to find their voice in Web3, and to find autonomy as creators.
