European-trained American painter Grant Wood completed this painting in 1930 after surveying rural Iowa for a point of inspiration and finding the Dibble House, built in Carpenter Gothic style which lends the artwork its name. He composed the painting with “the kind of people [he] fancied should live in that house” - depicting a farmer and his daughter in austere and simple country wear.

The painting was initially received poorly by the rural people it claimed to depict, but later gained appreciation as it got widely parodied and became akin to one of the first ‘memes’ in recent American history. Once painted to blend satire and appreciation in a single frame, now animated to evoke a sense of ‘always watching’ in your home!
